Can you tell us more about Sandy van Helden?

I'm Sandy van Helden, I'm an illustrator, and I live and work in Amsterdam.

How would you describe your style?

My style is characterized by graceful lines and fresh colors, and there's always a nod to contemporary fashion or culture. My style is pretty consistent, but I'm not fixed when it comes to materials. So, I really enjoy expressing my style in various materials. I create murals, work with chalk, work with wood, and pretty much everything in between.

Can you tell us more about the wall-painting?

The idea behind the mural was that it's the bag of a person who's traveling, and it falls over, spilling all the souvenirs from New York.

What inspired you for this collaboration?

I've spent quite a bit of time in New York recently. So, I went through my photos and thought about what stands out to me as a Dutch tourist walking around there. I was really focused on the apples because, of course, it's called the Big Apple. And then there's the fruit sticker that says New York on it. But I also worked a lot with "thank you" bags because I find them to be really typical of New York. New York is also known for its cocktails. These are all cocktails that originate from New York.

What's your favorite item?

I think my favorite item has to be the crewneck with the postcard design. It reminds me a lot of America. It's like a graphic tee in that color. It's just kind of become a symbol for America. I think that's my favorite item.
