Did you know that the varsity jacket trend has been around for a long time? It started in 1862 with Harvard University's athletic uniforms. Athletes would cut out the letter H. Then they would sew it onto their sport jerseys to easily recognize what school they were representing. Sweaters, cardigans and bomber jackets soon took on the letter H too, and other universities and high schools followed suit. Athletes earned their varsity letter by playing for a particular team: the varsity team. Wearing a varsity jacket let everyone know what school you were from and what team you were on.
